Business licences issued for commerce in Dubai increased by 76 per cent in 2009 according to figures released by Dubai Department for Economic Development (DED), despite the economic downturn. Throughout 2009 the DED issued 11,633 licences for numerous businesses. Issuances for the professional sector rose by 22 per cent and tourism and business rose one per cent each. According to the figures licence renewals reported a two per cent increase in 2009, with commercial renewals again increasing by 76 per cent. Professional organisation renewals increased by 20 per cent, followed by industry two per cent and tourism one per cent. The DED also reported a 31 per cent increase in commercial permits in 2009, the issuance of 157 licences for foreign firms with British companies making up 21 per cent of these.
